Over the course of the last six and a half(!!) years, I’ve completed my fair share of DIY projects. Though my DIY background originated from little more than glue gun burns, I’ve learned over the years that using the proper products and tools make all the difference.
Today, I thought I would share with you three of my older projects and talk a little bit about how they have held up over the abuse that we dish out on them. These particular projects were all coated with my favorite brand of interior paint, Glidden, so I’ll be able to discuss how the paint has held up over the years.
Stripped Wall in Playroom
In 2012, I transformed our playroom from a boring beige space into a colorful area with vintage appeal. One of my favorite parts of the redecorating was the turquoise and white horizontal stripe that I painted on two of the walls.
A lot of homeowners are nervous to paint their walls bright white for fear of scuffs, handprints, and general paint damage from every day use. However, I’m happy to point out that this is not the case for the this particular formula of paint (Glidden Premium Interior – flat sheen ). Even though our walls do get dirty, they are easy to clean.
For example, here is a spot where the kids had a woven basket of play food. Over a few months, it rubbed against the wall and left some transfer marks. Sorry for the dark image, but it was the only way that I could show the marks (that are totally visible with the naked eye – go figure!).
To clean, I simply needed to use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe away the marks.
Within minutes, it was good as new.
I use the flat Glidden Premium Interior paint on all of the walls in my home, and we are thrilled with the way it wears. We have a lot of active kids in and out of our house, and the only thing that’s ever messed up our paint is wayward paint splatters from other projects – and that’s an easy fix with a little jar of touch up paint!
Verdict: I love Glidden Premium Interior paint on my walls. Find it at Home Depot.
Emma’s Mid-Mod Styled Dresser
In 2013, Tom built a gorgeous dresser for Emma’s bedroom. I stained the drawers a dark brown, and I painted the box of the dresser with Glidden’s Trim and Door Paint.
I love the high gloss sheen and bright white color of this paint (it is also available in other pre-mixed colors). It’s an oil-based paint which I don’t generally use, but the idea of it making a hard finish on a piece of furniture in a child’s room was really alluring.
The paint has definitely held up in Emma’s room – and she puts it through lots of abuse. I’ve found spilled water, stickers, tape and glue on it, and there are no marks to be found from those items. The only problem we’ve had is when one of her horses fell off of the shelf above it. The horse hit the edge of the dresser so hard that it dented the dresser down to the wood. Of course, the paint chipped on that edge, and I don’t feel like it should have resisted that ding since the wood underneath is even chipped. That horse fell hard (and broke into a zillion pieces). I need to fill, sand and repaint that area on the dresser, but I just haven’t gotten around to it.
Verdict: The Glidden Trim and Door Paint is holding up beautifully. Just don’t drop a ceramic horse on it from 6 feet above.
Window Screen Covered Record Cabinet
In 2012, I added some window screen detail to a vintage record cabinet and painted it bright green. After a TERRIBLE finish from spray paint (the last time I ever spray painted furniture!), I sanded it down and used Glidden Premium Interior paint in a satin finish (color: Garden Party) and put a black glaze on top of it. We use this piece to hold our cable box, DVD player, Wii, etc.
This piece has had to put up with a lot of stress from the kids. They slam the doors closed about 10 times a day, when they are in and out of it getting whatever Skylanders or DVDs they want. Even after all of that, the majority of the piece still looks perfect. The biggest problem is the edges of the doors, but you can’t see the damage when the doors are closed.
In all honesty, latex paint isn’t really a great choice for a piece of furniture that gets a lot of use. An oil-based paint is a little more work due to the way you have to clean your brushes and tools, but it forms a harder finish than latex. The fact that the latex paint on this piece has, for the most part, held up so well says a lot to me about the brand.
Verdict: I no longer use this type of paint on furniture pieces, but the Glidden Premium Interior latex has withstood a lot of abuse.
